Teaching & Learning
All A Level and BTEC courses are linear, with final examinations at the end of Year 13. Some subjects have a coursework element and it is important to read subject details to understand what is required for the subjects you may wish to study.
The linear approach creates opportunities as well as challenges, as it enables teachers to explore some topics in depth, whilst still covering a very broad curriculum. It is important that students sustain a high level of work focus throughout the 2 years in order to achieve well in all their subjects. To support this, we have established a structural programme of support with examinations in January and June of Years 12 and 13 (June examinations in Year 13 are external). These help students to review and revise topics of work, as well as ensure they become familiar with examination strategies.
Progress checks and grades every half term provide an additional monitor on each student’s progress and if necessary, appropriate intervention strategies may be implemented.
All courses are delivered by two teachers who are expert in their subjects. We use a range of teaching techniques and styles designed to complement the course content as well as to develop the skills and techniques of independent study, which will be invaluable for them in their studies or job roles after A Levels.
Students will be expected to complete 5 hours of homework per subject per week. This may be a review of their notes as well as wider reading on specific tasks related to the lesson.
Our option blocks are designed to enable students to access a wide range of relevant and appropriate subject combinations.
