Curriculum: Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)

Students in Years 7 and 8 follow a broad curriculum which includes all the following subjects.

English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, French or Spanish, Art, Drama, Music, ICT, Religion, PE, Technology and PHSE.

Some students in Year 7 and 8 may be provided with additional support and will benefit from extra Literacy and Numeracy lessons and will therefore have a more flexible timetable.

Most subjects will group students into sets to reflect their ability so that appropriate work can be set for each individual. There is a regular and frequent review of each students set and where teachers feel that a change would benefit a student, parents will be informed.

Students in Year 9 continue to follow a broad curriculum which includes the following subjects for ALL students:  English, Maths, Science, French or Spanish, ICT, Religion, PE, Technology and PHSE.

  • Students in Year 9 begin to prepare for their GCSEs in many of the subjects shown above and in some subjects (Maths and Science) the teaching content for the GCSE examinations will begin.
  • At the end of Year 8 students will have already chosen to focus on one humanities subject (Geography or History) and this course begins at the start of Year 9.
  • Students are also able to choose at the end of Year 8 to study two out of three subjects from Art, Drama and Music throughout Year 9.  This will allow them to develop their knowledge and skills; therefore preparing them for their GCSEs should they choose these subjects in the option process.
  • Students in Year 9 will choose their 2 final GCSE options after Christmas through the options process.

From September 2017 The Pingle Academy will assess students in key stage 3 using the newly implemented 9-1 GCSE grade system with a focus on studying in more depth and ensuring mastery of knowledge and skills.
